The .177 caliber pellets are lighter and smaller compared to .22 and .25 caliber pellets. So why should you invest your time and money in looking for the best .177 air rifle? To answer this question, let us look at some statistics. On average, a .177 caliber air rifle has a velocity of 921 FPS and a power output of 15.64 FPE. Contrastingly a .22 caliber air rifle offers a velocity of 735 FPS. As for power, you get 17.4 FPE. As for the kill zone, the .177 rifle stands at 11.4 to 43.7 yards, while the .22 rifle kill zone is 9.4 to 35.7 yards.
From these statistics, it is clear that while the .22 caliber pellet is more powerful, the .177 pellet is faster, more accurate, and has a longer range. This makes it the perfect caliber pellet for hunting pigeons and rabbits, which are fast. Obviously, if you want to hunt something bigger, the .22 and .25 caliber pellets will be more your style. But if you are in the market for a plinking and varmint control rifle, a .177 air rifle will be the best option. This brings us to the all-important question: What is the best air rifle for the .177 caliber? There are very many different.177 air rifles out there, and here are our top 8 best.

Additionally, the Picatinny accessory rails below the cylinder and on each side of the forearm offer convenient options for attaching additional equipment, such as bipods or lights.
The included Side Shot magazine has a generous capacity, ensuring a sufficient number of shots before reloading. However, it is worth noting that the magazine capacity varies depending on the caliber, ranging from 21 rounds in .30 to 38 rounds in .177. This is something to consider for shooters who require extended shooting sessions without reloading.

Handling the Gamo Whisper Fusion Mach 1 Air Rifle during our field test was good. However, I felt a heavy side in the front of the rifle. The balanced weight distribution could enhance control and stability, contributing to more accurate and controlled shots.
Customizable Trigger Pull
The CAT (Custom Action Trigger) system of the Gamo Whisper Fusion Mach 1 deserves special mention. The Gamo Whisper Fusion Mach 1 supports various ammunition types, particularly .177-caliber pellets. This versatility allows you to choose from a wide range of pellets, catering to your specific shooting requirements. Whether you opt for lightweight pellets for high velocities or heavier ones for increased accuracy, this air rifle adapts to your preferences seamlessly.
Limitations to Consider
Scope Zeroing and Accuracy: Some users have reported difficulty in zeroing the scope, leading to inconsistent accuracy. It’s essential to invest time and effort in proper scope adjustment to achieve optimal performance.
Safety Placement: The safety catch of the Gamo Whisper Fusion Mach 1 is located inside the trigger guard. Care must be taken to avoid accidentally pulling the trigger instead of engaging the safety catch.
Front-Heavy Design: The rifle is front-heavy, lacking optimal balance. A better weight distribution, with slightly more weight towards the back, would have improved the overall handling experience.
Cheek Rest Adjustment: Unlike its non-Mach 1 counterpart, the Gamo Whisper Fusion Mach 1 lacks an adjustable cheek rest. Users who prefer a customizable fit may find this aspect limiting.
Conclusion
The Gamo Whisper Fusion Mach 1 Air Rifle offers a compelling package for those seeking a .177-caliber air rifle with exceptional accuracy, power, and versatility. Gamo Swarm Maxxim G2 .177 Cal Multi-Shot Pellet Rifle
At this stage, I would like to introduce Gamo Swarm Maxxim G2; with its promise of exceptional power, accuracy, and user-friendly features, this Spanish-made air rifle piqued my interest. Below I will share my personal experience and delve into the strengths and weaknesses of this rifle, taking into account its unique limitations.
Powerful, Yet Challenging:
The Swarm Maxxim G2 boasts impressive power, delivering velocities of up to 1,300 feet per second (FPS) with alloy .177 caliber pellets.
However, it is important to note that this gun is not easy to shoot. The cocking mechanism requires significant upper body strength, making it less suitable for individuals with limited physical capabilities. During shooting time, I found the cocking process to be demanding, which may pose a challenge for some users.
Flawed Magazine System:
While the 10X GEN 2 rapid reload technology concept is commendable, its execution leaves much to be desired. The magazine system, which should facilitate seamless follow-up shots, falls short in reliability. A notable number of pellets fail to chamber appropriately, resulting in inconsistent performance. This unreliability not only hampers the shooting experience but can also compromise safety. It is crucial to address this issue as it undermines the overall effectiveness of the rifle.
Noise Reduction and Accuracy Remain Key:
Despite the limitations mentioned above, the Whisper Maxxim noise-dampening technology continues to impress. The rifle’s noise reduction feature effectively minimizes the sound generated during each shot, allowing for discreet shooting sessions.
Additionally, the Gamo 3-9×40 scope included with the rifle enhances accuracy and reliability. I achieved tight 1-inch groupings at 20 feet with consistent precision, which is a testament to the rifle’s inherent accuracy when combined with the scope.
Custom Action Trigger and Comfort:
The CAT (Custom Action Trigger) system offers the advantage of independently adjustable 1st and 2nd stages, enabling shooters to personalize their trigger preferences.
Throughout my field test, I found the trigger to be responsive and predictable, contributing positively to shot placement. Furthermore, the Recoil Reducing Rail (RRR), with its adjustable air rifle shock absorber, enhances comfort during shooting sessions, mitigating recoil impact. This feature allows for more enjoyable and extended shooting experiences.
Rapid Reload Technology:
One of the standout features of the Swarm Maxxim G2 is its 10X GEN 2 rapid reload technology. Equipped with a horizontal magazine integration system, this air rifle allows for lightning-quick follow-up shots.
The 10-shot magazine is seamlessly integrated into the rifle, making it compact, low profile, and remarkably easy to use. Simply break the barrel and fire, and you’ll be ready for another shot in an instant. This feature greatly enhances the overall shooting experience and ensures minimal downtime between shots.
Durability:
Crafted in Barcelona, Spain, the Swarm Maxxim G2 maintains its reputation for quality and durability. Despite the limitations mentioned, the overall construction of the rifle demonstrates sturdiness and resilience.
Conclusion:
The Gamo Swarm Maxxim G2 .177 Cal Multi-Shot Pellet Rifle combines power, accuracy, and user-friendly features. However, it is important to acknowledge the limitations associated with its demanding cocking mechanism and flawed magazine system. These factors may deter shooters with limited upper body strength and compromise the rifle’s reliability. Nonetheless, the rifle’s noise-reduction technology, adjustable trigger, and recoil-absorbing Rail contribute positively to the shooting experience. If improvements are made to address the magazine system’s reliability, the Swarm Maxxim G2 could undoubtedly solidify its position as a top contender in the world of .177 air rifles.

This innovative system eliminates the need for a spring, resulting in improved accuracy and reduced vibration. I found the cocking effort of 30 pounds to be manageable, allowing for quick and efficient reloading during my shooting sessions.
Scope and Optics:
No air rifle review would be complete without discussing the included scope. The Gamo 6110068754 Swarm Whisper Air Rifle has a 4×32 fog-proof scope, offering decent magnification and clarity.

The Gamo Big Cat 1250 .177 Air Rifle Review
Starting us off is a rifle that I believe is one of the most powerful break barrel air rifles on the market. That being said, this Gamo air rifle can shoot pellets at a velocity of up to 1250 feet per second.
Though its stock is not made of hardwood, which is what I prefer, the polymer used to make the stock feels and looks very solid. Another thing that made me love this rifle is its ferocious power. I can fire up to 1000 lead pellets in any weather with this rifle.
And it gets better; the rifle is fitted with a 4-medium high dampening level, which means it is not as noisy as you would expect from a spring piston rifle of its caliber.
While some reviews have labeled this rifle bulky, I found it to be manageable, probably because I have used heavier guns. The gun weighs 6.1 pounds and measures 43 inches in length. Furthermore, it can be used by both left and right-handed shooters.
Thumbs Up
- Comes with a two-stage adjustable trigger
- It can be used by both left and right-handed shooters
- This air rifle uses both lead and PBA Platinum pellets
- Comes fitted with a good 4X rifle scope for increased accuracy

This is a rifle fit for a pro. Thus, if you are new to air rifles, this air gun might not be in your league.
Crosman PCP Challenger .177 Caliber PreCharged Air Rifle Review

Ruger Blackhawk Combo Air Rifle Review
The simplistic design of the Ruger Blackhawk Combo air rifle belies its capabilities. The gun is a break barrel single shot rifle, which means you have to pump it after firing a shot.
This system might take some time to get used to, but eventually, when you do get used to it, using the gun becomes effortless.
Astonishingly, this budget air rifle can propel a pellet at speeds of 1000 FPS. And there is more since this rifle uses the .177 pellet. It is quieter and fires more rounds.
I have used this rifle to kill small rodents such as possums at long range. So if you want a rifle that is capable of killing small rodents in a humane manner, then this rifle is a great option.

Umarex 2251306 Fusion Combo 750FPS Review
If you are looking for a silent pellet gun, then the Umarex 2251306 Fusion Combo 750FPS is one I highly recommend. A friend of mine owns this .177 caliber air rifle, and he claims it is the best quietest air rifle in his arsenal.

With the rifle, I was able to fire 54 shots before its velocity dropped to below 600FPS, which was impressive. As for the all-important noise level, I was pretty impressed by how silent the rifle was, thanks to its silent air sound moderator.
The 4X32 scope mounted to the scope was of the same quality as the scopes installed on several other rifles within this Umarex’s price range. The black synthetic stock of the gun was stylish, while the rifle’s metal parts had a good finish.

Things To Consider Before Buying A Top Notch .177 Air Rifle
To find the right .177 Air rifle, consider the following factors
Determining Your Needs
Before you embark on your search for the ideal .177 air rifle, it is crucial to identify the purpose and intended use of the firearm. Different shooting activities require specific features and capabilities. Let’s explore the various purposes and their corresponding requirements:
Target Shooting:
If your primary goal is precision and accuracy in target shooting, you should focus on air rifles with high-level accuracy, consistency, and a reliable trigger mechanism. Look for models with adjustable triggers and match-grade barrels, as they can greatly enhance your shooting experience.
Pest Control:
When it comes to pest control, your focus should be on a combination of accuracy and power. Look for air rifles with sufficient velocity to effectively dispatch pests while maintaining good accuracy. Spring-piston or gas-piston air rifles are often popular choices for pest control due to their power and ease of use.
Small Game Hunting:
For small-game hunting, you need an air rifle that offers sufficient power and accuracy. Look for models with higher velocities and consider features such as a longer barrel length for increased muzzle energy. PCP air rifles are often favored for their power and consistency, making them suitable for hunting small game.
Power and Velocity
Power and velocity play a crucial role in the performance of an air rifle. They determine the force with which the pellet is propelled and its speed. Understanding different power sources and their pros and cons will help you make an informed decision:
Spring-Piston:
Spring-piston air rifles use a coiled spring to generate power. They are known for their simplicity, affordability, and ability to generate high muzzle velocities. However, they require effort to cock and can have more recoil compared to other power sources.
Gas Piston:
Gas piston air rifles use a gas-filled cylinder to generate power. They offer smoother cocking and shooting cycles, reduced recoil, and increased durability compared to spring-piston models. Gas piston air rifles are also less affected by temperature changes, providing more consistent performance.
Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP):
PCP air rifles utilize a compressed air reservoir to propel pellets. They offer high power, excellent consistency, and the ability to shoot multiple rounds without the need for frequent reloading. However, PCP air rifles require a separate air source, such as a hand pump or scuba tank, for recharging.
Matching the power and velocity to your specific needs is essential to ensure optimal shooting performance. Consider factors such as the shooting distance, the size of the target or game, and any limitations or regulations in your shooting environment.
Accuracy and Range
A high-quality barrel contributes to improved accuracy. Look for barrels made from materials like stainless steel or high-grade alloys, as they offer better consistency and precision.
The trigger also plays a crucial role in accuracy. A crisp, adjustable trigger allows for better control and precise shot placement. Look for models with adjustable triggers to customize the trigger pull to your preference.
Choosing the right lighting system is essential for accurate shooting. Consider options like open sights, iron sights, or scopes. Scopes provide magnification and enhanced target acquisition, making them popular choices for improved accuracy.
Selecting the right features for your shooting requirements is crucial. For target shooting, consider a match-grade barrel and a precision sighting system. In hunting scenarios, prioritize a reliable sighting system and sufficient accuracy to ensure clean and ethical shots.
Build Quality and Durability
When it comes to manufacturing an air rifle, the choice of materials plays a crucial role in determining its durability and weight. Different materials offer distinct advantages. Synthetic polymers, for example, provide a lightweight option that is resistant to various weather conditions. On the other hand, wooden stocks offer a more traditional aesthetic appeal and can be more comfortable to hold.
However, it’s not just about the materials themselves; the overall construction of the air rifle also matters. Look for air rifles with solid construction, robust components, and quality craftsmanship. Pay close attention to details such as the fitting between metal parts, the integrity of the stock, and the overall build integrity.
To ensure that you invest in a well-built air rifle, it is advisable to opt for reputable brands known for their quality and reliability. Do some research on customer reviews and consider brands with a proven track record in the air rifle industry. Choosing a brand that has built a reputation for excellence will likely result in a more satisfying and durable purchase.
A well-built and durable air rifle will be able to withstand the test of time, providing you with years of shooting enjoyment. When making your selection, consider your shooting environment, intended use, and personal preferences. Each shooter has unique needs, so it’s important to choose the material and construction that best suits your specific requirements.
Comfort and Ergonomics: Weight, Stock, Grip
Comfort and ergonomics play a crucial role in maximizing your shooting experience with an air rifle. One key aspect to consider is the weight and balance of the rifle itself. Lighter rifles offer greater maneuverability, allowing you to easily adjust your aim and move around while shooting.
On the other hand, heavier rifles provide increased stability, reducing the impact of recoil and aiding in maintaining steady aim. It’s important to find the right balance that complements your shooting style and physique.
Another significant factor to pay attention to is the stock of the air rifle. The stock is the part of the rifle that you hold against your shoulder, and it can greatly influence how the rifle feels in your hands. Look for stocks that offer adjustable features, such as a cheekpiece or length of pull, which allow you to customize the fit according to your body proportions. Ergonomically designed stocks are specifically crafted to enhance comfort and improve shooting control. By investing in a rifle with a well-designed stock, you can experience increased comfort and greater precision in your shooting.
A comfortable grip is essential for maintaining a secure hold on the air rifle and achieving better control. When selecting an air rifle, be sure to consider models that feature textured or checkered grips, as they provide a non-slip surface that enhances your grip. This ensures that the rifle remains firmly in your hand, even during extended shooting sessions or adverse weather conditions.
By finding an air rifle that suits your physique and shooting style, you not only enhance your comfort but also improve your overall performance on the shooting range or in the field. To make an informed decision, consider visiting a local shooting range or gun store where you can handle different models and assess their ergonomics firsthand. This hands-on approach allows you to gauge how well the rifle fits your body and how comfortable it feels in your hands before making a purchase.
Optics and Sights
Scopes offer magnification and allow for precise aiming at various distances. Look for scopes with adjustable magnification, a clear reticle, and high-quality optics for optimal performance.
In contrast, red dot sights offer a different advantage by providing a clear aiming point that facilitates quick target acquisition. These sights are particularly useful for shooting at close to medium ranges and when dealing with fast-moving targets. The simplicity of the red dot sight allows for rapid target acquisition and tracking, making it a favorite among tactical shooters and those who require quick reaction times.
On the other end of the spectrum, iron sights represent the most basic and traditional sighting option. Consisting of front and rear sights, they can be effective for shorter-range shooting. Some air rifles even come equipped with adjustable iron sights, providing the flexibility to customize your aiming based on specific shooting needs. While iron sights may lack the magnification or ease of acquisition provided by scopes and red dot sights, they can still be reliable and practical for certain shooting scenarios.
When choosing optics and sights, it’s essential to consider your shooting purpose, the distances you’ll be engaging targets at, and your personal preferences. Understanding these factors will help you make an informed decision that aligns with your shooting style and needs.
Noise and Recoil
Different air rifles produce varying noise levels. If shooting in urban or noise-restricted areas, consider models equipped with noise-reduction features, such as integral suppressors or shrouded barrels. These features reduce the muzzle report, making your shooting experience quieter.
Recoil can also affect your shooting accuracy and comfort. Air rifles with gas piston or PCP power sources generally have reduced recoil compared to spring-piston models. Additionally, features like recoil pads or adjustable buttplates can help manage recoil and enhance shooting comfort.
Carefully assess your shooting environment and personal preferences when selecting an air rifle with suitable noise levels and recoil management. This ensures that you have a pleasant shooting experience while complying with any applicable regulations.
Maintenance and Upkeep
Regular maintenance is vital for keeping your air rifle in optimal condition. Regularly clean the barrel and other parts of your air rifle to remove debris, lead residue, and lubricants. Use appropriate cleaning kits and materials designed specifically for air rifles.
Apply proper lubrication to the moving parts of your air rifle to ensure smooth operation. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for lubricant selection and application. Also, inspect your air rifle for any signs of wear, damage, or loose components. Pay attention to critical areas such as the trigger mechanism, barrel, and stock integrity.
Consult the manufacturer’s manual or online resources for specific maintenance instructions tailored to your air rifle model. Regular maintenance not only ensures optimal performance but also prolongs the lifespan of your air rifle.
Budget and Value for Money
Setting a budget range for your air rifle purchase is a practical step in the decision-making process. Determine the essential features you require based on your shooting needs. Focus on features that directly impact accuracy, power, and durability.
Opt for reputable brands known for their quality craftsmanship and reliability. Consider customer reviews and seek recommendations from experienced shooters. Assess the performance of different models by considering factors such as accuracy, velocity, and consistency. Look for models that consistently deliver the performance you desire within your budget range.
It’s important to find the right balance between your budget and the features and performance you seek. Remember that investing in a higher-quality air rifle may offer better long-term value, as it is likely to provide enhanced performance and durability.
Safety and Legal Considerations
Familiarize yourself with the safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer. Always treat your air rifle as if it were a firearm, even though it may not be subject to the same regulations. Follow proper handling procedures, including keeping the air rifle pointed in a safe direction, engaging the safety mechanism when not in use, and storing it securely.
Legal Restrictions:
Research and understand the legal restrictions and regulations pertaining to air rifles in your area. Check for any age restrictions, licensing requirements, shooting restrictions, or designated shooting areas. Ensure compliance with local laws and regulations for both purchase and usage.
By prioritizing safety and adhering to legal requirements, you can enjoy your shooting activities responsibly and avoid any potential legal issues.
