A customized rifle gives you a sense of freedom. Thanks to advancements in gun technology, there are many parts to customize. Of the many parts you can customize, none is as important as the trigger. Without the latter, your rifle is useless.
When you want to customize your rifle trigger, the one question on your mind will be, which is the right trigger to buy?
Battle Of Jewell Trigger VS Timney (Aftermarket Triggers)
In this article, we will be looking at the two most popular aftermarket triggers, the Jewell trigger vs. timney. These two triggers both have their supporters and detractors. So which is best for you?
Pull weight adjustment
One main reason why you may opt for an aftermarket trigger is how easy it is to adjust the pull weight. When choosing which trigger to choose, one factor to consider will be the pull weight adjustment. The Jewell trigger has an adjustable pull weight of 1.5 ounces to 3 pounds. The timney trigger, on the other hand, can be adjusted from 1.5 pounds to 4 pounds. In regards to pulling weight, it will depend on your preference. Some people love the heavier pull weight of the Jewell trigger.
Size of Jewell and Timney Triggers
When we talk about the size, we are referring more to the width of the trigger than its overall size. When placed side by side, it becomes clear that the Timney trigger is the wider of the two. It has a width of 4 inches while the Jewell trigger measures 2 inches. Personally, I prefer the narrower Jewell trigger as it allows me to feel the break of the trigger a lot better. However, some people may prefer the timney trigger as it offers a wider surface area. The wide surface makes it easy to rest your finger on the timney trigger. Also, for some people, the lack of a sharp screw edge is a welcome change. The timney trigger’s wider surfaces are lined with groves, which improves grip.
Construction Of The Both Triggers
Jewell triggers feature a modular design. This design allows for the complete disassembling of the trigger for cleaning and maintenance purposes. While this is a good thing, there are many complaints of the trigger malfunctioning in dusty conditions. Thus, Jewell triggers are prone to malfunction when exposed to dust, sand, and dirt. This means they require more maintenance. The timney trigger, on the other hand, has a better record when dealing with harsh elements.
Price Differences Between Jewell and Timney Triggers
When it comes to price, there is a significant difference between the two. If you are budget conscious, then the timeny trigger may be a better option for you. Nonetheless, the Jewell trigger is a better overall trigger compared to timney triggers. While both are crisp and predictable, the jewel trigger tends to be of better quality.
Installation: Easy Or Complex
When it comes to installation, both are easy to install. The timney trigger comes with a small pin inserted to hold everything together when installed. Once the installation is complete, the small pin drops and can be discarded. The Jewell trigger, on the other hand, comes with a forward-mounted spacer. The latter has a pin in the firing pin stop. The purpose is to ensure the trigger is a single assembly when not installed.
Trigger Adjustments
One reason why Jewell’s triggers are popular is how easy they are to adjust. You do not have to remove the action from the stock to adjust the trigger. Using screws fitted into nylon inserts, you can easily adjust the trigger. Thus there is no need for the thread-locking mechanism.
